Alvarado on defeat at the UN: “When you are consistent with the principles, there is no defeat.”

October 18, 2019 by Staff News Writer

President Carlos Alvarado, made comments on social networks about the diplomatic defeat of his administration this Thursday, when it lost to Venezuela a position in the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) for the period 2020-2022.

When you are consistent with the principles, there is no possible defeat, just work ahead. We thank the 96 countries that supported us, an effort made in a few days to raise our voice in the face of flagrant human rights violations in Venezuela,”

tweeted Alvarado a few minutes after the vote in New York.

This Thursday, the President was participating with Vice President Epsy Campbell in a forum on the rights of the Afro-descendant population. Upon entering the capital hotel where the activity took place, he did not want to give statements to the media nor did he speak when he left.

In the election this Thursday at the UN, Costa Rica only reached 96 votes, compared to 105 obtained by the regime of Nicolás Maduro, from Venezuela. Brazil, that bet on re-election, won 153 votes. For the 2020-2022 period there were only two positions available.

Costa Rica announced its candidacy on October 3rd, 14 days before the election, so legislators and political analysts did not predict a good result, since these candidacies are achieved after months and even years of negotiation between the States.
