Alvarado says his statements about abortion have been wrong

August 16, 2018 by Staff News Writer

President Carlos Alvarado acknowledged that he has made wrong statements about the technical norm of therapeutic abortion, in an interview with Columbia News.

Alvarado has postponed signing the amendment to Article 121 of the Criminal Code that regulates therapeutic abortion despite being a campaign promise, due to an agreement reached with the Minister of the Presidency Rodolfo Piza.

The president said that the norm will be signed when he sees fit, when asked again about it, he said that his priority was the fiscal deficit.

On Thursday, in an interview about the first 100 days of government, he said that one of his mistakes has been the way he referred to abortion.

I’ll be honest, if I’ve made a mistake in these 100 days, is in the way I’ve addressed therapeutic abortion. Because it has to do with the times, but it is also a human issue (…),”

said Alvarado.

Alvarado is optimistic about the work done in these 100 days and responded to the criticism about Piza’s share of power in the government saying he has an excellent work relationship with the minister and other hierarchs as well.
