Amazing Coyote sighting in Corcovado

April 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The presence of a coyote on a beach in Corcovado National Park, in the South Zone, did not go unnoticed. Through an official statement, the park administration announced the -unusual- sighting of this individual of the species known as Canis latrans.

Why is that sighting amazing? According to scientific analyzes, in Costa Rican territory, coyotes can be found anywhere, except in the Osa Peninsula (where Corcovado National Park is located). The territorial distribution of the coyote goes from North America (including Alaska) to western Panama.

The image was captured by the guide Maicol Salas, who works in the area.

In May last year a puma was also seen in that same national park. However, these individuals are common in the area.

The Corcovado National Park, one of the most popular in the world, is characterized by the volume and variety of fauna, including species of monkeys, sloths, anteaters, poison dart frogs, alligators, crocodiles, and dozens of bird species. It is located 350 kilometers from San José. It has more than 42,000 terrestrial hectares and 5,000 marine hectares, including coral reefs, mangroves and freshwater marshes. It has six trails, where visitors can walk for more than three hours to observe its rich biodiversity.
