An artificial reef was installed in Hermosa beach

January 23, 2017 by Staff News Writer

With the support of 8 divers from the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) and waste electrical insulators, the installation of an artificial reef was started in Hermosa beach, Guanacaste.

From December 2016 to January 2017, 52 structures were installed in the bottom of the sea, to an 8-and-9 depth.

The results have been satisfactory so far, as there is stability at the bottom of the sea, as well as small fishes in the reef,

declared Walter Arias, from ICE Socio-Environmental Business and Distribution Division.

He added that the structures need to have algae in a natural way, so that polyps or coral seeds can grow there.

This innovative initiative contributes to the protection of these seriously-threatened ecosystems.

Also, in accordance with the responsible waste management of ICE, porcelain insulators are used after the end of their useful life.

Extensive research and laboratory testing was done to guarantee that the materials used do not generate any pollutant release.

From February, a monthly immersion will be carried out during six months to document and evaluate the results. If positive, the rest of the reef will be installed.

If the planned artificial reef is completed, it is estimated that the maritime ecosystem of the area will advance its evolutionary cycle in 100-150 years , taking into account that a it grows approximately one centimeter per year.

This project is carried out with the participation of divers from Arenal, Dengo and Sandillal hydroelectric plants, marine biologists and ICE supporting staff, the Ministry of Environment (MINAE) and the Condo-Fish Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting reefs in the area.
