ANEP proposes a “pause” in the strike

October 10, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The resolution of the Constitutional Chamber on the voting after the first reading of the Public Finance Strengthening project will be key for the unions to maintain or modify the actions of the indefinite strike.

Wálter Quesada, from ANEP, confirmed that the Union presented a document that suggests pausing the protests.

On the 31st day of the indefinite strike, ANEP met at the Episcopal Conference in its National Advisory Council. From outside the room, the slogan “Not a step back” was heard and Albino Vargas, General Secretary of that union, reiterated that the movement is still standing.

However, the document being analyzed suggests:

Suspending, in unity and temporarily, the General Strike condition to face this new stage with new strategies to fight the FISCAL COMBO. The foregoing in the understanding that the workers’ organizations, in the exercise of their autonomy, may call for new days against the processing of the FISCAL COMBO at the time they so determine.”

This break would allow the unions to meet in the communities, according to them, to talk with municipalities and citizens, to establish strategies whether the vote is authorized in the second reading or not.

ANEP assures there is not a massive return of unionists to their work centers, but that they are free to go to work or not, because there is still no ratification on the illegality of the strike.
