Animal advocates criticized death of horse in bullring

January 8, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The death of a horse after being gored by a bull on Saturday afternoon in Zapote generated criticism from the organization Save Movement Costa Rica. Hours before the incident the group had held a demonstration against this activity.

The video shows the horse after being injured by the bull. You can see the animal bleeding and running desperately through the sand, while several men try to control it to get it out of the area.

Adriana Montero, organizer of the movement, commented that this is what they want to prevent. That is why they ask for the end of bullfighting, a tradition for many Costa Ricans.

Around 20 people participated in the demonstration, both outside and inside the arena.

Many people have the misconception that because these animals are well fed and so on, that is not torture or abuse. However you can see how they are electrocuted with a pike every time they go out, they are kicked to be enraged and for more entertainment, because if the bull comes out and does nothing, there is no fun. So they do not kill them, but they mistreat them,”

criticized the spokesperson.

Leonardo Araya, president of the Organizing Committee of the Popular Celebrations, pointed out that this is part of the risk run by both animals and horsemen. But he assured that it is a unusual occurrence.

The horse had to be sacrificed, because the wound caused by the bull was “incompatible with life”.
