Attorney General has more time to investigate cementazo

October 31, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Criminal Court of Finance of Goicoechea accepted the request of the Public Ministry to declare cementazo as a complex procedure case.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in a document on the terms of the Criminal Procedure,

a case can be declared complex because of the high number of facts being investigated, the number of victims or the number of accused. Its objective is to double the deadlines.”

This procedure seeks longer terms for pretrial arrest, investigations, and resolution.

Fernando Vargas, lawyer of the Chinese cement importer, indicated that they will request the release of Bolaños under precautionary measures. However, the prosecution would seek to extend the arrest.

The hearing that would define whether Juan Carlos Bolaños, importer of Chinese cement, remains or not in pretrial custody started on Wednesday. He has been arrested since November 2017 and is being investigated for alleged crimes of embezzlement, influence peddling, slanderous reporting, and simulation of crime.

At that time, six other people were arrested, all officials of the Bank of Costa Rica, who are currently out of jail.
