Authorities dispose of 147 kilograms of sea bass

August 3, 2017 by Staff News Writer

With the help of responsible fishermen, the National Coastguard Service found a large quantity of fish caught illegally in the mouth of Chira Island, in the Gulf of Nicoya.

In this area there is an alliance between responsible fishermen and the Coast Guard authorities, which operate from Puerto Níspero Station. The officers moved to the spot and found a trammel of 700 meters long and a 3-inch light.

The net was placed in a form of enclosure and contained 147 kilos of sea bass. This type of fishing, in the most traditional dynamics, places the net near the exit of the rivers to the sea to catch the fish.

The Coast Guard saw several boats fleeing, as reported by the Ministry of Security.

Not being a confiscation, but a finding, all the product that was trapped in the net was discarded,”

said the institution.

The regulations of the Costa Rican Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Incopesca) and the Law of Wildlife Conservation prohibit fishing one kilometer around the mouths, because these sites are favored by several species for reproduction, so using any fishing gear there is illegal.

The authorities said that using confinement-like nets is a crime against the environment and the economy of the most vulnerable sectors of the Gulf of Nicoya.
