Bike tour in San José for a smoke-free environment

May 28, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Johanna Vásquez

A group of cyclists toured the capital to celebrate health and cry out for a smoke-free environment.

Although the World No Tobacco Day will be celebrated on May 31st, sports people decided to ride their bikes from La Sabana to Parque del Este on Sunday.

Their motto: change cigarettes for a bicycle.

Carlos, one of the cyclists and organizing member of this event, urged Costa Ricans to join this type of activities because it is a group for all levels and ages. Children, youth and older adults joined the initiative.

The Costa Rican Sport and Recreation Institute (ICODER), the Red Cross and Institute of Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (IAFA) supported this initiative. The starting point was the park in front of the Roosevelt School in San Pedro.

At this point, cyclists took a snack, while another group practiced Zumba and Hula Hula.

According to data from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), in the country, eight out of 10 cases of lung tumors have originated from smoking.
