Bill aiming to block signal in prisons

July 5, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Executive Branch submitted a bill intended to compel telecommunication companies to block their services within prisons in the country.

The initiative was presented as part of a strategy that aims to stop scams and crimes that are carried out from prisons. According to the record from Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), the measure comes up due to crime rate increase, including cybercrimes.

During 2014, the OIJ recorded 468 offenses to the law and by 2015 that number rose to 685.

It was reported that in 2015, 28 computer frauds were committed. However, in January, 2016, these crimes increased by 275%.

The bill gives six months to the three domestic telephone networks to implement the necessary measures to block their cellular signal in prisons.

This effort is not new, and there are no complaints. As smartphone technology advances, the chances for criminals to continue operating from prisons increase.
