Emilia Molina, Member of Partido Acción Democrática (PAC), confirmed that the bill to ban improper relations will be read in Congress on Monday.
The bill was called off a few days ago. However, the issue regained strength when the case of a 40-year-old teacher, who married a 15-year-old student, was known.
Among other things, the bill intends to punish consensual sexual intercourses between a minor and someone who is 5 years old older.
Regarding the mentioned case, although the relationship is not illegal in Costa Rica, the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) started an investigation in the Department of Disciplinary Affairs to determine whether the link between the teacher and the child responds to an improper relationship; if so, Sonia Marta Mora, Minister of Education, declared that the woman can lose her license to work as a teacher.
Milena Grillo, Executive Director of Paniamor, stated that they need support from the Legislative because that is a problem that involves minors in relationships with adults. She added that society needs to stop thinking of these relationships as something common that causes no harm.
