Ziad Akl, brother of Elías, the man killed on Monday morning in Escazú, was arrested on Monday afternoon at the international airport Juan Santamaria when he was trying to flee to New York.

Another man, Elías’ bodyguard, also died in the shooting, while a minor was injured in front of the Mount View School of Guachipelín.

The Ministry of Public Security (MSP) confirmed that these subjects would have been living in Costa Rica for several years.

Both of them entered using the Canadian passport as tourists. However, they would have used fake passports to move recently.

He was leaving San José to El Salvador and from there to New York. He did not have suitcases,”

said Gustavo Mata, Minister of security.

Mata confirmed that they were alerted that Akl had been dropped off at the airport by several armed individuals traveling in a vehicle.

At the moment, an operation is been conducted in the vicinity of the air terminal to find the existence of the alleged vehicle.

Juan José Andrade, director of the Public Force, confirmed that several raids by the judicial police were carried out on properties linked to the criminal group to which those involved would belong.

Also, the Akl brothers were surprised a few days ago in a capital bar carrying heavy weapons.

Several days ago, one of the men killed today, Angel Blanco Hidalgo, the alleged bodyguard, was arrested in a Tibás bar with several large caliber firearms.

The Akl have Canadian nationality. However, they are of Lebanese descent. According to the American press, they both have been involved in crimes committed in Montreal, Canada.
