Budget allocation for education is unconstitutional

September 15, 2016 by Staff News Writer

The Constitutional Chamber ruled in favor of an accusation for unconstitutionality against the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) for designating less than 8% of gross domestic product (GDP) to Costa Rican education.

According to the resolution, in 2015 the minimum amount of public spending on state education was not covered, despite being established in Article 78 of the Constitution.

This case was resolved on September 7th. The resolution was drafted by Judge Fernando Cruz.

The Executive and the Legislature are warned not to incur again in the omission that motivated this complaint,”

reads the resolution.

The money designated for education in Costa Rica covers the preschool years, as well Basic General Education and Higher education.
