Business expectations are low

October 12, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Business expectations for the fourth quarter of 2016 show a slight improvement, but they are located at the lowest level in the last 7 years.

According to estimation from the Institute for Research in Economics (ICSI) from the University of Costa Rica, index rose 1 percentual point but it is the lowest figure since 2010.

Max Soto, a researcher at the university, explained that the small, positive variation was basically due to the increase in the expectations of the trade, service and agricultural sectors.

Less favorable expectations are related to construction and manufacturing sectors.

According to the quarterly survey of business opinion, employment expectations are similar to the previous trimesters, but there is a decline in trade and construction.

Despite this, Soto stated  that there is a perception of deteriorating competitiveness in all sectors and hence entrepreneurs has little optimism, similar to the years 2012 and 2013.
