Campaign seeks that for more Ticos say no to single-use plastic

June 11, 2018 by Staff News Writer

More than 80% of the pollution of the seas comes from terrestrial sources, and more than 80% of it corresponds to some type of plastic.

Similarly, it is estimated that around 270 thousand metric tons of plastic float in the oceans, fragmented into five billion particles and every year, eight million tons of plastic are deposited in the oceans again, equivalent to the capacity of a garbage truck every minute.

Therefore, Marviva Foundation, calls for reducing the consumption of single-use plastics through the campaign #ChaoPlásticoDesechable.

According to Marviva, consumer choices play an important role in reducing pollution, which makes it essential to promote lower consumption, as well as substantial changes in production and marketing schemes.

The campaign also seeks that businesses join this type of initiative and offer sustainable alternatives to consumers, in order to avoid that in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea.

You can join this campaign by performing the following actions:

• Use cloth bags and avoid plastic bags when shopping.
• Avoid disposable plastic bottles. Choose reusable alternatives such as returnable glass.
• Do not drink drinks with straws.
