Can ketosis diet work?

September 30, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Before spending a lot of money in trending treatments to lose weight, get help with professionals and find out if the treatment you love, it’s right for you, since you put your health at stake.

In Costa Rican market, there is a trend to activate ketosis process, which takes place when there are not enough carbohydrates in the body so it doesn’t have energy, therefore the body begins to use fat to get it .

Melania Cevo, nutritionist at Consultas Nutrición, confirmed that these plans offer a very dramatic weight loss in a short period, which is what people want.

These plans are very low in carbohydrates and high in protein. With ketosis diet, people don’t lose muscle and water, as commonly happens in other low-carbohydrates plans so it could be a small benefit,

explained the specialist.

In addition, Alejandra Irola, a nutritionist at Instituto Costarricense de Metabolismo y Nutrición (ICOMET). with these processes, fat burning begins when the body has at least 3 days without carbs.

She also informed that when analyzed each food group, most of them will have carbohydrates; only proteins and fats don’t include them. As consequence, people will ask you not to consume flour, beans, lentils, etc. and that is not promoted as healthy eating. then, dairy products as well as fruits and vegetables stop being consumed, so that, food consumption is based on protein and fat, which lowers the amount of fiber.

After some days, the person loses weight, but it is not healthy because, nutritionally, the patient is not complying with minerals and vitamins that the body needs and the effect is temporary.

According to both nutritionists, this diet, hand in hand with a professional, may work, as long as it is temporarily and the person does not suffer from dyslipidemia, constipation, pressure problems, among others.
