Candidates describe environmental advocates as “extremists and eco-terrorists”

January 17, 2018 by Staff News Writer

On Tuesday morning there was a debate between five presidential candidates focused on the agricultural issue and production.

Juan Diego Castro, Antonio Álvarez, Rodolfo Hernández, Carlos Alvarado and Rodofo Piza addressed several issues related to Costa Rican agriculture. One of them was the struggle of environmental groups against the agricultural production.

The candidate of the PIN indicated that they will not encourage eco-terrorist groups and assured that he would be inclined to the oil and gold exploitation, as they do in developed countries.

If we live on a gold or oil treasure, we will exploit it properly,”

said Castro, who added

We are not going to subordinate the development and production of this country to the whims, businesses or tricks of the eco-terrorist groups.”

Antonio Alvarez said that his government will not allow them to tell them how to protect the environment, especially not extremist groups.

Rodolfo Piza also mentioned that harassment of productive sectors by environmental groups will not be tolerated, since the country needs to produce in all sectors to reactivate the economy.

Finally, Carlos Alvarado is committed to farmers who can produce peacefully, provided they do so taking a balance with environmental protection.
