Cartago experienced more than 25 earthquakes on Saturday

January 21, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Since midday on Saturday, several earthquakes were recorded in some sectors of Cartago, as reported by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI).

Corralillo, Tablón and Quebradilla, experienced 25 earthquakes, all of which had a magnitude lower than 2.2 degrees and with depths less than five kilometers, which is classified as superficial.

According to the OVSICORI there were many more, which reveals a seismic swarm in the area. The entity indicated that until late at night the micro-seismicity continued, which was reported by the inhabitants of the place. In addition, the residents of these areas claimed to hear rumblings.

The experts indicated that this area of the Old Metropolis already experienced a seismic swarm like this way in 2011.
