Catholic Church will no longer be a mediator between government and unions

October 1, 2018 by Staff News Writer

On Monday afternoon, the Catholic Church announced its decision to withdraw from the conflict and no longer mediate between the government and the unions in the midst of the national strike of public employees.

We believe that we have responded to the call and petition that was made to us. We have reached the purpose that we set out to achieve. That is all on our part, so we invite the parties to move forward because the country cannot stop. Our mediation work has come to an end,”

said Monsignor José Rafael Quirós on Monday.

Quirós also announced that the Catholic Church rejected the government’s request to safeguard the document that both parties agreed to at dawn on Saturday, after more than 100 hours of negotiation.

In the midst of this panorama, the negotiation between the government and the unions came to a standstill. The government said it will keep the document for a week in the Ministry of Labor, waiting for unions that wish to subscribe to do so.

However, on Monday, the unions reiterated their rejection to the proposal and assured that they will not sign it. The unions insist that the fiscal plan must be withdrawn from Congress to sit down to negotiate with the government to find a solution to the fiscal crisis of the country.
