CCSS has not approved nursing booths

August 9, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Although the Social Security Fund (CCSS) promotes breastfeeding in the country, it does not have booths in its institutional units. However, if they receive a formal initiative, a specialized technical group would analyze it and issue an order.

The CCSS is currently working in the creation of breast milk banks for the Women’s Hospital in San José and in Monseñor Sanabria Hospital in Puntarenas. The only breast milk bank is located in San Ramón.

In addition, most hospitals that have a delivery wing also feature breastfeeding and development clinics. Breastfeeding is encouraged in the first hours of birth.

Doctor Robert Moya, pediatrician from the standardization program of child care of the CCSS, said the promotion of breastfeeding is given from the moment the mother goes to prenatal care, reinforced during preparation courses for childbirth and after this they provide training for the correct way to nurse the infant.

In 2015, 300 officials were trained to publicize the benefits of breastfeeding, including guidance in all maternity hospitals on non-pacifier use, to avoid disturbing the newborn’s process of sucking.
