CNE issues Yellow Alert for the Caribbean and North Zone

January 14, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) issued a Yellow Alert for the Caribbean cantons of the country and the Northern Zone, after receiving reports of water logging in the cantons of Limón, Guácimo, Talamanca and Matina.

The institution also had to open a shelter for 11 people from Guatuso, in Alajuela, and maintained a green alert for the populations of the North and Central Pacific, the Central Valley and the canton of Coto Brus in the Southern Zone.

Iván Brenes, president of the CNE, confirmed the measures and said that conditions are expected to remain similar on Monday.

The Commission has received reports of strong winds in Heredia, Alajuela, and Turrialba, and landslides on Route 32, which caused its closure. There have also been landslides in Tucurrique.

Brenes asked bathers on both coasts to be cautious due to the strong waves, as well as in the zones vulnerable to floods and landslides.
