College of Psychologists supports MEP sexuality program

August 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The Professional College of Psychologists of Costa Rica congratulated the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) for the new programs of Affectivity and Sexuality that will come into effect as of next year in schools in the country.

Through a press release they indicated they recognize the advances of the MEP on the subject. They added that they are more than willing to expand and improve the ministry’s actions.

The new Programs of Education on Affectivity and Sexuality promoted by the MEP have been built on the basis of the best available scientific evidence and in consultation with specialists in the subject,”

they added in the document.

The MEP will open about 600 positions for psychologists to teach these lessons from next year, despite the controversy that have raised religious groups, who oppose these classes for students.

The education of affectivity and sexuality has been recognized internationally as a fundamental element to overcome poverty and improve human development indices,”

they added.

To implement such a program, the country will have to invest about ยข 800 million per year. Parents who do not want their children to learn about affectivity and sexuality will have to go through a process to be excluded from the group.
