Colombian fugitive who killed a beggar was caught in San Pedro de Montes de Oca

January 31, 2019 by Staff News Writer

A fugitive from Colombian justice who had an international arrest warrant for homicide was caught in an investigation carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Second Judicial Circuit of San José.

Márquez Calderón was arrested on Wednesday night, after he apparently attacked a security guard at his place in San Pedro de Montes de Oca with a machete. The victim suffered severe injuries that warranted his transfer to a hospital.

At first, the suspect identified himself as Quintero Álvarez. However, the investigations made by the Prosecutor’s Office allowed them to follow his trail outside these borders. Through Internet press publications, the authorities became aware of the case for which he was convicted in Colombia: he had killed a beggar known as El Indio who asked him for food in 2015 in Antioquia.

In coordination with the Interpol, it was confirmed that the subject is wanted by Colombian authorities, since he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2017, while working as a diving instructor in the city of Medellín.

Márquez came to Costa Rica in October 2017 with a tourist permit, but his current immigration status is irregular.
