Companies can receive training to become carbon neutral

December 1, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica is preparing to execute the Carbon Neutrality Country Program 2.0, which will take effect in January 2018. The proposal seeks to be a key tool to reach zero emissions of greenhouse gases in the year 2080.

To put this program into practice, training for companies and people wishing to join the initiative is essential.

The multidisciplinary team Arterias Urbanas will carry out an introductory training, in which they will explain what carbon neutrality is. It will be held on December 2nd from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Chinchillete Café in Barrio Escalante.

According to Marcela Navarro, forestry engineer, the importance of companies having a carbon neutrality strategy lies on the the fact that climate change already affects the country.

The training will highlight the concepts of climate change and greenhouse effect and their impact on the planet, water currents and atmospheric stability. The carbon neutrality adviser indicated that the activity will also address historical and political elements, about the country’s goals, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

The concepts of emissions, reductions and removals of greenhouse gases will also be specified, as well as the sources of these emissions. In addition, they will indicate what ideas can be implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and how to compensate them and remove carbon dioxide from the environment,”

explained Navarro.

Currently, being certified is a voluntary process for companies. The engineer said that by doing so, organizations can do a better management of resources.

They make an efficient use of energy, especially electricity and fossil fuels, among others. It also attracts customers and reduces operating costs and it is in line with environmental legislation,”

concluded Nvarro.

Those interested in participating in Saturday’s training can send an email to arteriasurbanascr@gmail.com or phone 8950-2304.
