Congress will investigate aircraft purchase for more than ₡ 4,200 million

August 16, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The purchase of the plane for the Ministry of Public Security, for ₡ 4,262 million, caused discomfort among the legislators of the republic. Therefore, they approved a motion to investigate the entire process that took place during the fiscal crisis.

In the agreement, they made the decision to question Gustavo Mata, former Minister of Public Security; Juan Luis Vargas, Director of the Air Surveillance Service of the Ministry of Security; and Mario Alberto Umaña, Supply Director of the Ministry of Public Security.

The Government opted for the purchase in December 2017, while insisting on the approval of new taxes.

The motion was presented in the Commission on Income and Public Expenditure by Jonathan Prendas, from National Restoration, who used the opportunity to criticize the government and brought out the case of former Ottón Solís.

The aircraft is a King Air 250 Slick brand to fight drug trafficking and illegal fishing. It has seats for the pilot, co-pilot, and operators of the Air Surveillance Service. Previously, the Ministry reported that this aircraft may be used until next year.

The legislators also question why the award for the purchase of the plane took place in just three days, since the opening of the contest began on December 8th and by December 11th the process had already been completed.

Mata said previously that the purchase was made to the United States Government and had the backing of the Comptroller General of the Republic.
