Congressman proposes not covering the faces of arrested suspects

September 6, 2016 by Staff News Writer

José Alberto Alfaro, a Libertarian Congressman, presented a bill to stop police officers from covering  the faces of detained suspects.

There isn’t an applicable law. In some cases the identification is questionable but not in others, depending mainly on the political context and leaving aside the most important aspect: the victim’s protection,”

said the legislator.

Alfaro says that insecurity and violence increased exponentially in recent years and considers it important to adapt the rules to the national and regional situation. It’s important to note that in Mexico and other Central American countries do not cover the faces of their criminal suspects.

This project, and another one that urges to interrogate criminal suspects immediately after arrest, comes at a time when crimes against children and a high rate of murders have been occurring in the country for several months.
