Costa Rica asks Israel to stop violence against Palestine

May 17, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican government called on Israel to stop the violent repression against civilians in Palestine, which left 60 people dead on Monday alone.

The demonstrators were repressed by the Israeli army with gunfire at the time the new US embassy in Jerusalem was inaugurated.

Costa Rica joins the concern of the international community over the escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip and strongly urges Israel to stop the violent repression against the Palestinian civilian population. Costa Rica deeply regrets the death of civilians that has occurred in the last hours in Gaza, as well as the thousands of wounded reported. Our condolences go to the families of the victims,”

said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The Costa Rican government called on both the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to resume negotiations to end the conflict.

Today more than ever, it is urgently required that the Israeli and Palestinian authorities resume credible negotiations on the core issues of the conflict that still exist. Our country reiterates the favorable position for a political agreement through respectful dialogue, in accordance with international law, to achieve a solution to the coexistence of two states, Israel and Palestine, living in peace, one next to the other, within safe and mutually recognized borders and by the International Community,”

adds the text of the communiqué.

The UN Human Rights Council and Amnesty International, deemed enemies by Israel, referred to Israeli actions as war crimes.
