Costa Rica condemns arrest of Leopoldo López and Antonio Ledezma

August 2, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Tuesday afternoon, the Foreign Ministry sent a statement saying that they repudiate, condemn and regrets the surprise imprisonment of opponents Leopoldo López and Antonio Ledezma, who were under house arrest.

The Foreign Ministry calls López and Ledezma

political prisoners … This happens only one day after the creation of the flawed National Constituent Assembly by the Government of Venezuela. Costa Rica expresses its deep rejection of these actions that continue to undermine the remnants of democracy in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica assured that these decisions of the Venezuelan authorities distract the possibility of a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Costa Rica, adhering to the values of democracy and respect for human rights, will carefully monitor all events taking place in Venezuela and strongly condemn violations of the rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms, and the persecution and disqualification of opponents of the Government,”

stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
