Costa Rica in the OAS: “The people of Nicaragua are still suffering”

December 27, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The representation of Costa Rica in the Organization of American States (OAS) reiterated on Thursday the need for the Government of Nicaragua to stop the repression in that country plagued by political crisis.

The people of Nicaragua are still suffering as a result of repression (…) Costa Rica reminds the government of its obligation to respect the human rights of all people and their undeniable need to open up to dialogue,”

said Antonio Alarcón, alternate Costa Rican representative, said during the extraordinary session.

On December 27th, the Council met to learn about the most recent report that concludes that in Nicaragua the State committed a crime against humanity. The session was chaired by the former Costa Rican ombudsman, Montserrat Solano.

Costa Rica also condemned the fact that Nicaragua has expelled the OAS mechanisms that documented crimes against humanity.
