Costa Rica ready to defend its sovereignty in The Hague

June 29, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On July 3rd and 4th Costa Rica will show up before the Inter-American Court of The Hague in the hearings where it will defend its position before the maritime delimitation process with Nicaragua and also on the military post located on a beach in Isla Calero.

Chancellor Manuel González will be in The Hague, Holland for the first round of hearings that will conclude on July 13th, followed by a second round of hearings. Meanwhile, Nicaragua will present its allegations on July 6th, 7th and 13th.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, there is a lot of confidence in the work that has been done and that will be presented to the Court.

The cases that are discussed date to February 25th, 2014 (to determine the maritime boundaries with Nicaragua in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean) and January 16th, 2017 (after Nicaragua moved a military to a sector of the beach of Isla Portillos, which the International Court of Justice had declared as Costa Rican territory in the judgment of December 16th, 2015.)

After the hearings, the Court will make the final deliberations of the cases, which will be treated as one, and the resolution would be ready in December of this year.
