Costa Rica still has the worst 4G network in the world

June 7, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica has the worst mobile Internet speed in 4G networks, according to a new study by Open Signal released on June 7th.

The analysis delves into mobile telecommunication systems in 75 countries around the globe. The study was conducted between January 1st and March 31st this year. More than 500 devices were used and more than 19 million measurements were made.

The 4G LTE network, unlike its predecessors like the 3G network, provides faster voice or mobile data services. For example, the 4G LTE network allows speeds 10 times greater than the 3G network and 250 times more than 2G.

To get an idea, Costa Rica has an average speed of 5.14 megabits per second (Mbps) and it ranks last in this item. On the other hand, Singapore has an average speed of 46.54 Mbps and thus it ranks first.

The speed of 4G speed can depend on many factors: how much spectrum is dedicated to LTE, whether the country has adopted new 4G technologies (such as LTE Advanced), how densely built networks are and how much congestion there is. In general, countries with the fastest speeds tend to be those that have built LTE-Advanced networks and have a large proportion of devices with LTE-Advanced capability,”

cites the analysis.

As a relevant data, compared to the same study presented in December last year, data from Costa Rica did not improve. For example, at that time, the average reported speed was 5.82 Mbps, slightly higher than that recorded in the analysis presented today.
