Costa Rica voted in favor of a credit for Nicaragua’s police

June 14, 2019 by Staff News Writer

Costa Rica voted in favor of a $16.3 million loan granted by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) to finance Nicaraguan police operations.

This was denounced on Thursday by legislator Pedro Muñoz, from the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC), based on a note sent to him by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) in response to a query.

The loan was approved on June 28th, 2011 to finance the modernization of radio communication systems, strengthening of operational and mobilization capacities, and improvement and expansion of territorial deployment coverage of police services.

At the time of approval, the country was represented by Jorge Wálter Bolaños as director before the BCIE.

The level of execution of the loan is $6.5 million, according to the letter addressed to Muñoz by the current director before the bank, the ex-deputy Ottón Solís.

I am dissatisfied with the vote from Costa Rica in favor of the use of this money to repress the Nicaraguan population and perpetuate the Ortega Murillo dictatorship,”

expressed the Social Christian.
