Costa Rica will assume SICA pro tempore presidency

December 12, 2016 by Staff News Writer

According to Manuel González, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the summit of Heads of State from the Central American Integration System (SICA) will be held on December 16th in Nicaragua, where Costa Rica will assume the pro tempore presidency of the entity.

González also said that Costa Rica will take this position only during the first half of next year.

The country will be represented at the summit by Helio Fallas, Vice President and Minister of Finance, and deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Alejandro Solano.

González reiterated that president Luis Guillermo Solís will not make more trips in 2016, hence the presence of the Vice President on this one-day summit.

Costa Rica had retired from SICA politics in December 2015, following the little support from the region in addressing the Cuban migration crisis.

SICA is composed by Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize and the Dominican Republic, which was the last country to be part of this organization.
