Costa Rica will face severe water shortages

February 22, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) referred to the lack of water that afflicts some communities in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) and the rest of the country.

The shortage conditions are linked to the impact of the drought (lack of rainfall) because of El Niño phenomenon.

According to data provided by the entity, some 114 thousand people are already suffering the effects of the shortages. This translates into 15% less service available for the entire country.

We are facing one of the most difficult situations in recent years. The cycle of El Niño phenomenon has been shortened, so the resilience capacity of the structure and communities is shorter in much of the country,”

said Manuel Salas Pereira, general manager of the AyA.

The official explained that the impacts would be more severe than in 2016.

The AyA asked citizens to save water and avoid wasting the precious liquid, particularly in vulnerable places.

The entity is prepared with tank tanks to supply the most affected communities. However, according to Salas, the support of these systems will be prioritized towards essential and health services.
