The Costa Rican flag has been waving for two months in Antarctica. Marino Protti, seismologist at the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica, from the National University (OVSICORI-UNA), has participated for 2 months in a camp with renowned scientists from around the world.

The expert has had to survive 24-hour flights. In addition, a tent has become his home, there is sunlight during the day and night, he now has a diet whose menu is based on meats and chocolates and he travels in sledge.

Protti returned to this site and during November and December, he has been collecting data through equipment (seismological stations), which were installed by him and other experts from the Universities of California and Santa Cruz three years ago.

All this information will serve to better understand the tectonic characteristics of Costa Rica, as landslides and glacier crashes in Antarctica are more frequent than those in tectonic plates.

Protti visited Antarctica as part of the WISSARD project. This is an interdisciplinary scientific work that studies the dynamics of Whillans subglacial lake and its hydrological systems.

Protti will return to the country in January.
