Costa Rican girl is the second best taekwondo athlete worldwide

February 16, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The young María José Calderón keeps exalting the name of Costa Rica, since, according to the ranking of the World Taekwondo Federation, she holds the second place in the entire world.

Calderón, world junior runner-up is one of those who dominate in the category of -44 kilograms worldwide.

Only 37 tenths separate the girl from the first place, which at the beginning of this year was in the hands of the Vietnamese Kim Ngan.

It is crucial to have a young athlete with these conditions, as it allows us to seek the classification for the Youth Olympic Games and indicates that things are being done well,

said the Federation’s President, Wilmar Alvarado.

The performances of María José as well as the rest of national taekwondo athletes add points for the 2017 Central American Games in Managua, and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Other Costa Rican athletes:

Khaterine Alvarado – ranked 16th in the senior category
Heiner Oviedo – ranked 26th in the senior category
Bryan Morales – ranked 83rd in the category -74 kg
Juan José Soto – ranked 123rd in the category -68 kg.
