Costa Rican helicopter confiscated in northern Guatemala

December 23, 2016 by Staff News Writer

On Thursday, the Costa Rican Police reported that a Guatemalan antinarcotics agents seized a Costa Rican registered helicopter that was to be transported on the platform of a four wheel vehicle in the north of the country, an area affected by drug trafficking.

The spokesman of the organization, Jorge Aguilar, told reporters that this is a Bell brand helicopter with Costa Rican registration Tl-ASL and that it was confiscated on Wednesday night.

The aircraft was seized in an area in the municipality of Las Cruces, department of Petén (north), in the border with Mexico and Belize.

Aguilar explained that the aircraft does not have the documents proving the legality of its entry into Guatemala, so it will be deposited at the airport of Santa Elena, Petén, while investigations are extended.

United States estimates that 90% of the cocaine consumed in its territory reaches Americans in all types of vehicles, planes, boats and even submarines, through the Central American countries and Mexico.

So far this year, Guatemala antinarcotics authorities have seized more than 11,000 kilos of cocaine, exceeding the historical figure of 9,959 kilos seized in 1999.
