Costa Rican who sent six tons of cocaine in a banana container was caught in Austria

July 8, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The Spanish National Police reported on the arrest of a Costa Rican with a Canadian passport in Austria. The subject is allegedly responsible for the shipment of six tons of cocaine hidden in a banana container in October 2018.

The fruit was seized at a dock in Malaga in southern Spain, and it was confirmed that same day that it had left from Costa Rica, following the route to Portugal and then direct to Andalusia.

The Tico has been preliminarily identified with the surname Thompson, whose home was raided by personnel of the Drug Control Police (PCD) as part of the link between said security body and the Civil Guard of Spain.

They have not revealed the results of the operation; however, it was expected to find computers and information that would allow to establish the way in which the shipment was coordinated to Europe.

Security Minister Michael Soto said they continue to exchange information to determine if there are more members of the international drug trafficking network in the country.

The investigation has the goal of dismantling one of the most dangerous organizations in Europe, which from the Netherlands mobilized large quantities of drugs as well as weapons.

The Spanish National Police indicated on Thursday they had located a home with hidden arsenal, following the arrest of the Costa Rican.
