Costa Ricans switch to environmentally friendly vehicles every two days

May 21, 2017 by Staff News Writer

Every two days, a Costa Rican decides to change their vehicle for an environmentally friendly model.

According to the figures of the Efficient Vehicle Acquisition Program (PAVE) of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, in two years a total of 386 vehicles were purchased through this system.

Deputy Environment Minister Irene Cañas says that, in order to achieve the goal that was set at the COP21 climate change summit in Paris, the transport sector must be tackled.

People deliver a quite-old car and receive a bond that can range from $1500 or $1000 to be deducted from the premium and they also get a preferential rate when purchasing an efficient vehicle,”

explained Cañas.

The proposal intends to renew the vehicle fleet to move towards more efficient technologies in conjunction with the agencies that joined the program. In total, the list is composed of 87 vehicles classified by the entity as efficient.

Although the data for 2017 are not yet available, Cañas stated that the trend in the first five months of the year is towards electric vehicles.

The PAVE Efficient Vehicle Acquisition Program is a project of the Ministry of Environment and Energy in conjunction with the Bank of Costa Rica (BCR), the National Institute of Insurance (INS) and the Association of Importers of Vehicles and Machinery (Aivema).

Its objective is to promote a reduction in national energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, mainly CO2, by providing financing aid for new eco-efficient vehicles, in the framework of reaching the country’s target of Carbon Neutrality in 2021.
