Country gets ready for tropical wave #18

July 18, 2018 by Staff News Writer

So far this year, 17 tropical waves have affected the country, mainly the Caribbean Zone, the Northern Zone, and the eastern Central Valley.

As a result of the heavy rains generated by the last tropical wave, the emergency authorities have enabled 19 shelters in 52 cantons for the care of 1,450 people.

In addition, the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Response (CNE) issued a green alert for the cantons of Guácimo, Pococí, Central Valley, Upala, and los Chiles, a yellow alert for Alvarado, Limón, Siquirres, San Isidro, Jiménez, Guatuso, and San Carlos, and a red alert for the cantons of Turrialba, Sarapiquí, Matina, and Talamanca.

The authorities foresee that surveillance will be maximized in vulnerable areas, mainly due to the announcement of the tropical wave 18 that would affect the country during the weekend.

As part of the measures that are being taken to assist the 456 families in shelters, a work table for humanitarian assistance was implemented, which is coordinated by the CNE and is made up of the Fire Department, the Costa Rican Red Cross, and the Public Force.

In addition, the CNE activated its operational structure and that of the Municipal Emergency Committees (CME) for the attention of the population affected by these meteorological phenomena.

The CNE asks the population to report to the 9-1-1 system, about any emergency or situation that occurs in the area where they live and to be attentive to the information provided to them through the official channels of the first response institutions.
