Country performed 495 transplants in 2017

February 28, 2018 by Staff News Writer

During 2017, 495 transplants were performed in the country, most of them corneas. Information from the Ministry of Health indicates that there were exactly 495, 297 of which were cornea transplants, 120 organ transplants and 78 bone marrow transplants.

Of the 120 organs, 104 were renal (40 with deceased donor and 64 with living donor), 12 hepatic (10 with deceased donors and two with living donor), and four cardiac transplants.

The country also reached a donor rate per million inhabitants of 6.7, with a high percentage (70%) of the donors being “multi-organ” donors, that is, they donated more than one organ.

The majority of the donors (nine) underwent surgery in the Calderón Guardia hospital, followed by Hospital México and San Juan de Dios Hospital with eight donors each. The Max Peralta Hospital had five donors, the Escalante Pradilla Hospital had two, and the Enrique Baltodano Hospital had one.

These transplants were a reality because people expressed their willingness to give life after death. According to the Ministry of Health, a positive aspect is that they have been able to perceive a decrease in the tendency of refusal to donate.
