Customs destroyed 10 million cigarettes

July 18, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Friday, the National Customs Service of the Ministry of Finance destroyed a total of 10.6 million cigarettes of different brands, valued at ¢ 192.1 million.

These products entered the country as contraband and without the corresponding sanitary permits.

The destruction was carried out in a landfill located in Aserrí, in the presence of customs personnel. As stipulated in DGA-DGT-32-2016, this act was duly informed to the Rural Development Institute (Inder).

The action was part of the joint work carried out by the Fiscal Control Police (PCF) and Santamaría Customs, and with it a provision of the judicial authority.

Smuggling and wanting to circumvent health permits erodes tax collection and endangers public health, so we will continue to strengthen controls on this issue,”

said Wilson Céspedes Sibaja, director general of Customs.
