Deaths reduced the electoral register for the second round by 2,100

March 25, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The second electoral round will use the same electoral register from February 4th. However, on April 1st there will 2,161 fewer voters. That is the number of deaths that have occurred since February 4th, according to the report by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

Just over 3,322,000 people were registered for the elections in 2018; however, and beyond the abstention, which in the first round was 34%, deaths were a factor that reduced the list of voters.

Since the electoral register was closed on October 3rd, 2017 and until February 4th, when the elections were held, 5,317 people died, which amounts to 7,478 fewer voters.

According to Héctor Fernández, director of the department of political parties of the TSE, this situation does not affect the process at all and they simply inform each receiving board of votes when a person dies, so that they are not counted within the abstentions.
