Deaths rise due to electoral violence in Nicaragua

November 8, 2017 by Staff News Writer

The number of deaths caused by violence after the elections in Nicaragua increased to seven, with the death of two demonstrators in Bilwi, in the Autonomous Region of the North Atlantic (RAAN), according to political sources and NGOs.

Two young men, whose identity was not specified, followers of the Yatama indigenous party, died during clashes with Sandinista sympathizers between Monday night and early morning on Tuesday.

The police report on the acts of violence is five dead, 67 injured, 31 arrested, nine houses and two public buildings burned during “isolated” events in 13 municipalities.

The incidents were concentrated on Tuesday in Bilwi, where the Yatama indigenous party did not know the result of the election. The mayor of that city lost to the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) party.
