December could be the most violent month in the country’s history

December 5, 2018 by Staff News Writer

December 2018 might become the most violent month in the history of Costa Rica, according to statements by Michael Soto, Minister of Public Security, in front of the Women’s Commission in the Legislative Assembly.

Soto said that December 2017 had been the most violent month; however, there have already been two more homicides this year than in the same period in 2017.

Only in the first five days, four femicides were committed. The hierarch said that there is an increase in violence due to the finals of the national football championship or festive dates.

We could be facing the most violent month. Believe me, we are working hard, and I do not say this to brag, but we have reached records so high that together with the deputy ministers we went out to patrol,”

said the Minister.

Due to economic situations, this year new police stations had to be halted to cover uniforms, boots and food for existing officers. In the last four years, Security has not bought new patrols, so Soto estimated that by the end of this year, they could buy 50.

December 2017 ended with 63 homicides.
