Dengue vaccine approved in the country

A vaccine that aims to prevent the spread of the dengue virus in the country won its approval by the Regulation Department of the Ministry of Health.

This vaccine aims to reduce 2 out of 3 cases of dengue, 8 of 10 cases of hospitalizations for this virus and 9 out of 10 severe cases.

However, it is not yet available for sale. Import processes are being studied.

This vaccine is specific to fight dengue in the 4 serotypes. The immunization is applied in 3 doses. Once you have the first dose, the second will be placed 6 months later and the third, 6 months after that.

People from 9 to 45 years old will be able to get the vaccine.

Costa Rica is considered an endemic country, reporting thousand cases of dengue per 100,000 inhabitants between 2005 and 2013.

The country spends about $ 102 million each year in medical services, activities for vector control and indirect medical costs.
