Do you drink too much alcohol?

October 14, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Near 391,100 Costa Ricans consume alcohol in a hazardous or dangerous way, which means that after drinking liquor, their physical, emotional or social welfare or those around them could be in danger.

According to the latest conducted by the Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (JAFFA), this figure represents 25.2% of Costa Ricans who consume alcohol at least once a year.

Authorities are worried because people could become dependent on this substance, the most consumed in Costa Rica.

As consequence, there is a list of signals that could indicate that a person’s consumption is not “moderate”.

-You prefer to drink instead of doing the things that you used to enjoy.
-You don’t go out with your regular friends, you prefer going out with people who drink liquor.
-There is a consumption pattern every Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
-During or after an emotional illness, you see alcohol as a solution.
-You think that consumption in minors should be more worrying than in adults.

According to the JAFFA, from 2010 to 2015, the percentage of Costa Ricans who actively consume alcohol grew by 7.4%.
