Domestic producers complain about rice imports

January 10, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Monday, a group of domestic producers decided to protest against the National Rice Corporation (CONARROZ) due to the imports of husked rice.

Protesters also call for the head of the organization’s executive director, as well as a reform to the law that created by the Corporation.

The main request is for the executive director to be changed and a new one chosen. Another request is that the law of 8285 and its regulations are modified… We also ask that industrials buy the rice from us and that the planting areas are not reduced,”

said Luis Martínez, representative of the producers.

According to farmers, rice is now being imported from companies that bring it with very low tariffs.
