Don’t let your guard down, zika is still here!

May 11, 2017 by Staff News Writer

On Thursday, the Ministry of Health called on the population not to lower their guard in the face of the latent threat of the zika virus.

The arrival of rains should alert people to eliminate potential breeding sites, in order to reduce the risk of spreading the mosquito that transmits dengue, zika and chikunguña.

It is important to remember that the best fight against mosquitoes is to dispose of waste, to ensure that homes, workplaces, educational centers and communities are kept clean and without standing or stagnant water where they can breed.

During 2016, the National Vector Control Program visited more than 687,000 homes providing direct education and helped eliminate more than 2 million breeding sites. In addition, a total of more than 759 thousand homes were sprayed.

Historically, in Costa Rica dengue cases begin to increase in May, which is related to the arrival of the rainy season.
