Drug dispute takes hold in the eastern sector of the capital

April 11, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Key points for drug trafficking in the canton of La Unión are the booty disputed by at least three drug dealing gangs in the east of the capital. The dispute over the territories has filled that canton with blood: in the last 15 months, the police have investigated at least 28 homicides and most of them are linked to retaliation and drug trafficking.

The deputy director of the OIJ, Michael Soto, announced that they are vigilant in this place, since there is a great concern because they are probably going to have a higher homicide incidence than last year. During this year the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) has registered seven homicides in the sector, and the statistical projection says that the 21 homicides registered in 2017 will be surpassed.

The official explained that drugs sales are not new in the area, but after several operations by the authorities the leaders who controlled the squares were captured. This caused the emergence of new leaders.

The hierarch said that the drug sales outlets become traditional points, as any commercial establishment, but where there are already established points there are struggles for that place.

Last weekend authorities dealt with two cases of retaliation in the San Diego areas. The analysis is that there is a criminal resilience in view of the fact that the leaders have been arrested and this has caused struggles.

So far this year, the OIJ reports 166 homicides throughout the national territory.
